Chanca Piedra, Phyllanthus Niruri: The Stone Breaker Herb

Origin and cultivation of chancapiedra

Chanca piedra, from its scientific name phyllanthus niruri, is a plant of the family Phyllanthaceae like amla, another plant with amazing properties. Chancapiedra is mainly found in the coastal areas of tropical regions. Its name, “chanca piedra” comes from Spanish. It means “to break the stone”.

In appearance, it is a small grass with erect stems that can measure from 30 to 60 cm in height. The stem contains a translucent latex. Chancapiedra is found in the Amazon rainforest but also in the Bahamas, India and China.

Its nutritional value is interesting and rich. Chanca piedra contains lignans, terpenes, flavonoids, lipids, benzenoids (benzenes), alkaloids, steroids, alkanes, vitamin C, tannins and saponins.

Its name is not insignificant. In fact, chancapiedra is very frequently used in South America in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to treat kidney stones, often referred to as “stone sickness”. According to these ancestral remedies, chancapiedra is said to break these stones. Today, medicine recognizes its qualities and this plant is more and more studied. Everything in the plant is used in traditional medicine, from the leaves to the latex.

Chanca Piedra and Kidney and urinary tract health

Chancapiedra is a plant of the Amazonian pharmacopoeia. It is not the only one. In recent years, several studies have been conducted on endemic species in this region of the world. These plants are incredibly rich in energy. Their use in the West brings strength and vitality to our bodies but also contributes to the local economy in a “consumer’s actor” approach. In the same way, knowledge of these plants is also part of an ecological approach since understanding the benefits of plants encourages their consumption and therefore their cultivation, and thus helps to fight against deforestation in the Amazon.

Chancapiedra is a remarkable Amazonian plant thanks among other things to its amazing properties on the renal system. It acts in particular against lithiasis which can affect the kidneys and gall bladder. It is reputed to be the plant that will dissolve and expel these stones from the body, thus relieving pain and preventing the appearance of new lithiasis. The indigenous people of the Amazon were already using the plant mainly for these qualities. Although some studies are underway to study and update all its amazing properties, preliminary research already confirms the precepts of the shamans of the Amazon region.

But first, what is lithiasis? How do these disorders develop? Lithiasis, whether urinary or biliary, is a pathology linked to the formation of one or more stones in the biliary or urinary tract.
These can be of different size and nature (organic, medicinal, infectious, hereditary, mineral).
With regard to urinary lithiasis, this stony mass blocks the natural flow of urine and causes very acute pain known as renal colic, which extends from the lumbar vertebrae to the genitals.
The development of these lithiasis is promoted by diet, lack of water intake and is sometimes also linked to malformations of the urogenital tract. Lithiasis mainly affects men and recurrences are very frequent. The pain is such that it is often compared to the pain of childbirth.

In biliary lithiasis, the stones block the bile ducts. These stones can also cause cases of colic, resulting in sudden and intense pain in the upper right part of the abdomen, which can radiate and cause vomiting. The pain becomes increasingly intolerable and blocks breathing.

Chanca piedra is therefore useful to treat and prevent the appearance of these lithiasis. It lowers the uric acid in the urine and thus prevents the formation of these famous “stones”. It is a very good diuretic which is used in the case of urinary infections, bladder and prostate disorders.
The plant also has antispasmodic properties that relax the muscle tissue of the urinary tract and thus facilitate the elimination of stones.

Many scientific studies have been able to prove its effectiveness in this regard. Its fields of action are vast: chanca piedra cures urinary infections, lowers uric acid, fights dropsy, fights bladder infections, relieves cystitis, relieves prostate disorders, avoids kidney disorders.

It should be noted that chancapiedra does not provide other preventive measures including good daily hydration (between 2 and 5 liters in case of attacks) and a balanced diet, low in salt and calcium, as well as good personal hygiene.
Note also that chancapiedra can be used in synergy with other effective active ingredients against disorders of the urinary tract (as in the case of cranberry) or biliary (as in the case of black radish).
If symptoms persist, ask your doctor for advice.

Chancapiedra and Liver and digestive health

Chancapiedra has other virtues.
In particular, it is known to have a protective and beneficial action on the liver, especially in cases of hepatitis B (a viral infection that attacks the liver) and damage produced by alcohol. The plant of chanca piedra helps to purge the liver of harmful substances and helps to detoxify it.

In 2002, a study published in India indicates that chancapiedra stimulates the production of bile which helps digestion and allows for better absorption of nutrients. It also slows down the absorption of substances considered toxic, particularly certain drugs. Traditional Chinese medicine also uses it for the same purpose.

Also, chancapiedra would be a good antioxidant: it would reduce oxidative stress, preserve the body from aging and prevent certain cancers.
Chancapiedra would also have an action on diabetes. Its high content of phenolic compounds helps control blood sugar levels.

Chanca piedra is therefore useful for:
– Protect, detoxify and strengthen the liver and liver functions, especially in the case of hepatitis B.
– Controlling certain pests
– Reduce spasms and colic
– Prevent ulcer formation
– To help eliminate liquids, especially in cases of water retention or oedema.
– Fight certain viruses and bacteria
– Preventing and controlling malaria
– Reduce cholesterol and sugar in the blood
